Getting Rid of Plastic

Everyone knows that BPA is bad.  Lately, I have been thinking that it's just better to move away from plastic in general.

Now that the littles are 4, 4, and 3, I felt like they were ready to say buh-bye to the ubiquitous IKEA cups and plates (love them!  cheap, BPA free and colorful!) and on to glass.

IKEA KALAS Tumbler - for v's kitchen. We find new uses for these daily... stacking, sorting, filling, emptying...

But what do you transition to once they outgrow or you want to get rid of the IKEA cups?

Mason jars.

Hear me out.  These half-pint mason jars are perfect for little hands, you can drop them and they are almost impossible to break and they are cheap.  Like $9 for 12.

The big kids and Chris and I drink out of the anniversary blue ones, and our littles love the glass ones and feel like they are big now.  Especially because we switched their plates to dessert plates made of ceramic.  They almost died the first time they came to the table and it wasn't their beloved plastic.

The bigger issue for me is what to store leftovers in?  We don't usually have a lot but I have been trying to make bigger meals so Chris can take them for lunches.  I just use the cheap glad plastic containers, but it gives me the willies, and I never put them in the microwave to warm up food.

Still, I'd like to get rid of them but don't know what to use.  The glass containers cost so much and you get so few of them.

One step at a time, I guess.

  1. Wait for after holidays and pick up the holiday themed pyrex storage containers on the cheap for your leftovers. I just picked up some Halloween storage bowls for $2, they're pyrex, so they can go in the freezer, fridge, dishwasher and microwave.

    1. I am definitely doing this! I didn't even know Pyrex did holiday stuff. I never look to seriously at it because of the cost, but clearance holiday I can do!
